Thank you for replying. I did follow this as you indicated in removing the section in the .htaccess file - http://wordpress.org/support/topic/w3-total-cahe-has-crashed-my-site-totally?replies=10
and reverted to the 0.9.2.9 version :) Everything seems to work again.
